The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library is now accepting registrations for its summer kids art camps, which includes four children’s workshops for ages 7-14. The classes start June 29 and end July 10 and vary in subject but generally focus on painting, print making, drawing, and ceramics. Each workshop is limited to 12 students, so be sure and sign up early if you’re interested!

Classes are split up into two date sections within the months of June and July.

June 29 – July 3 (5 days)

Many Ways to Make Prints, Ages 10-14
Mon-Fri, 9am – 12pm

Students will explore a different way of making a print, including linoleum blocks, carved foam, mono prints, basic silk screening and even printing fish. The instructor will give students the necessary skills and then encourage them to experiment and play with the techniques they learned. Students will go home with a portfolio of various prints. $160 members/180 nonmembers + $30 materials fee.

Painting with the Masters, Ages 7-12
Mon-Fri, 1pm – 4pm

This class gives children the opportunity to develop their skills as artists while they learn about the masters, such as Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock. Children will learn about color theory, positive and negative space, and how to create the illusion of form, all in a supportive and positive environment. Other fun learning experiences will include venturing outside the art studio to create action paintings! Please have your child wear clothing that can get dirty. $160/180 + $30 materials fee.

July 6 – 10 (5 days)

Land, Sea and Sky: Drawing in Nature with the Masters, Ages 7–12
Mon-Fri, 9am – 12pm

This is an outdoor arts adventure that takes place at the La Jolla Cove! Students will create a journal of close-ups of flowers and other plants, using chalk and oil pastel, while learning about Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, and the plant and animal explorations of Lewis and Clark. Kids will also study the work of Impressionist painters Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh and make their own watercolor and acrylic landscapes, and later will learn about color theory and expressionism through the works of Henri Matisse. $160/180 + $30 materials fee.

Ceramics & Sculpture Workshop, Ages 7–12
Mon-Fri, 1pm – 4pm

Students will get to explore a variety of projects in basic hand-building with clay, creating large creatures, masks, and imaginary environments. There will be plenty of time on the potter’s wheel for everyone to learn techniques in throwing a pot; they’ll be able to try their had at abstract sculpture, too. It’s especially important to put your kids in clothing that can’t get dirty for this one. $180/200 + $30 materials fee (includes firing).

Lunch supervision is available for full-day students. Materials fees are payable to instructor at the first class meeting and cover all necessary supplies. All classes will take place at the La Jolla Athenaeum (1008 Wall Street) unless specified otherwise.
