If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind jewelry store that carries everything from colored gemstones to vintage necklaces, diamonds, and even watches, Jewels by the Sea is your one-stop shop in La Jolla.
Linda Jalving opened her doors on Prospect Street in 2002, and has been showcasing an eclectic and creative mix of distinctive jewelry ever since. The Blue Book visited the shop to chat with Linda about her love of jewelry, favorite places to find hidden treasure, and how her passion found its way to La Jolla.
Passion Turned Career
As a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America, Linda’s knowledge of the field is both extensive and passionate. After graduating, she went on to begin her career at Ben Bridge Jewelers where she worked for nearly twenty-two years – though her love of jewelry didn’t start there. Even as a little girl, she would beg her mom to let her dress up with fancy bangles and gemstone necklaces; it was clear early on that she had a penchant for beautiful things.
After first stumbling upon the store space in the 90s, Linda fell in love with the little storefront and tracked its progression until she eventually saved up enough to purchase it from its last owners in 2002. At the time, there were few boutiques and even fewer privately owned jewelry stores, and now, with its extensive selection of vintage and locally-crafted finds, her store is truly a diamond in the rough.

Vintage Gems & Unique Finds
The jewelry selection in Jewels by the Sea ranges in price from $5 to $5000. She likes to showcase pieces crafted from artisans around the world. In fact, some of her favorite places to treasure hunt are annual international gem shows and estate or vintage sales. Some of her past finds have been nearly 100 years old! Linda is a firm believer that “jewelry always finds its way to the right people.” Jewelry finds us, and oftentimes, someone will find the perfect piece in her store without realizing they were even looking.
There are three things Linda looks for when she goes to pick out jewelry: uniqueness, that the piece is a good value for her client (reasonably priced), and quality or innovative design. When Linda goes to buy pieces, she won’t make a list of specific items she wants; she’ll simply let her eye wander and find something that stands out. All of the pieces in Jewels by the Sea are hand-picked completely by Linda, and she prides herself on carrying only the most bold, eccentric, and beautiful pieces from her searches.
A Story Behind Every Piece
When asked about her most unique piece, Linda showed us a large seahorse necklace pendant that was given to her a few years ago (as seen on Linda in the first picture above). The artist is unknown; however, after receiving multiple compliments on it, she decided to replicate it using pure sterling silver and now has three copies for sale at her store.
It’s safe to say you won’t find this kind of collection anywhere else in La Jolla, and it’s no wonder that Jewels by the Sea has been voted one of the Best Jewelry Stores by La Jolla Today and been included in the La Jolla Light’s “Best of La Jolla”!
Visit the shop at 1237 Prospect Street, Suite B, in the International Shops Courtyard in La Jolla or call (858) 459-5166. Linda’s hours are noon-6pm every day except Tuesday, and Sunday from 1pm-6pm.
