Independent Bookstore Day returns bigger and better than ever before this April! 2014’s first annual ‘California Bookstore Day’ was such a success that the event exploded nationwide in 2015, growing from 93 stores in our Golden State to more than 350 across the nation. As a city that still very much loves its books, San Diego is celebrating this year at five different independent bookstores!
One of the highlights of the day is the exclusive goodies that will be available on April 30 only, including: a Curious George plush doll with an IBD logo on his shirt, a Neil Gaiman coloring book, an illustrated guide to making the perfect burger signed by the one and only Anthony Bourdain, a vinyl record to accompany Rad American Women A-Z, and this year’s signature item, a Bad Citizen stencil featuring a quote from Fran Lebowitz – to name a few.
“We wanted to change the tired narrative of bookstores hanging on by a thread and being these musty throwback shops,” says Independent Bookstore Day program director Samantha Schoech, a former bookseller. Her husband, Pete Mulvihill, the co-owner of San Francisco’s Green Apple Books, had been wondering for a while why there wasn’t a bookstore equivalent of the venerable Record Store Day.

The idea blossomed, culminating in 2014’s inaugural California Bookstore Day. With money from the American Booksellers Association and sponsorship from some major publishers (including Penguin Randomhouse), her team was able to take the event national in 2015.
There are more independent bookstores this year than there were last year, and most of them reported a huge increase in sales on IBD 2015. So, “Join the Party” and celebrate books, bookstores, booksellers, and authors – there are several bookstores right here in San Diego that will be participating, including our very own Warwick’s, Mysterious Galaxy Books, the UCSD Bookstore, the Library Shop on Park Blvd., and West Grove Collective.
