So you’ve purchased a beautiful plant for your home or office, now what? House plants are a great way to add a little something extra to your home or office, however, keeping your plants healthy can be a tedious and at times confusing task. Luckily Chatfield’s Plantscape Images, who specializes in house plant maintenance in San Diego, helped us put together these simple house plant care tips to share with you all!
First, please take the time to locate and read the label that most plants come with. This label will contain helpful information such as the name of the plant, and how to take care of it. Also make sure that the plant is right for your home environment. Once you’ve chosen the right plant now it’s time to give it some TLC.
Follow these 3 easy steps to maintain your house or work indoor plant:
Lighting: Research what type of lighting your house plant needs and set accordingly. For bright light set 3 to 4 feet from a sunny window, for medium light 4 to 8 feet, and for low-light set at least 8 feet from a bright window.
Watering: One of the main reasons why plants die is over-watering. A helpful way to tell if your plant needs water is by checking the moisture of the soil. Simply dip your finger in the soil at a dept of two inches. After doing this you will be able to tell if the soil is dry, slightly moist or wet. If the soil is dry add water, if it’s slightly moist it can wait a few more days to be watered, and if it’s wet you might be over-watering so cut-back your frequency. Also, make sure that your pots have a drainage hole so that the water is free to flow and not sit at the bottom.
Fertilizer: Gardening and plant stores frequently feed houseplants so it’s important not to skip this step. Feed your houseplant every other week year round except during winter which requires only once a month. Chatfield’s recommends using a liquid fertilizer but please follow the instructions carefully.
