Be Fresh, La Jolla’s newest addition to the food scene, brings the traditional Mexican deli lunch to the heart of the Village. True to its name, it boasts a refreshing and light menu; nothing is cooked, fried, or greased, and all the vegetables and fruit are purchased fresh every morning. Owner Nancy Juarez, opened the lunch spot, located at 627 Pearl Street (at the old El Pescador location), in hopes of providing La Jolla with a Mexican fix without going the typical burrito or taco route, which can be a bit on the heavy side for a quick lunch.
Flavorful, Traditional Fare
The refreshing menu was designed by Nancy Juarez, who hails from Guanajuato, Mexico. Growing up, everything was fresh and grown locally; nothing was ever processed. Each item is dictated by the flavors and spices Nancy grew up with, and everything has a distinct character. Nothing is tasteless or without some type of sauce (chipotle, mayonnaise, and cranberry dressing are just a few of her staples), very much like traditional Mexican fare.
Be Fresh offers a little bit of everything: tortas (your choice of turkey, vegetable, chicken, or ham); ceviche tostadas (a delicious combo of cucumber, tomato, onion, and your choice of shrimp, soy, or cauliflower); wraps; salads; and bowls – all the fresh dishes you can think of, plus the classic Mexican sweet snacks and a few breakfast options.

The menu does a great job of incorporating fresh fruit into everything; there’s a fruit cup option and, even chamango is on the list – a traditional Mexican mango and chili drink. For those who want something on the sweeter side, Nancy’s horchata is blended fresh in the shop every day. A local favorite is the fresh juice; “Green Power” boasts a powerhouse combo of spinach, pineapple, celery, green grass, and orange juice. The “Vampire” is a simple mix of carrots, beets, orange, and celery. They pair perfectly with a fresh torta!
Healthy and Affordable
The idea sprouted when she decided to make healthy food her career; she knows La Jollans like healthy food and adore Mexican cuisine, so she figured she would combine them and create a brand new concept right in the heart of the Village. She began saving money for her venture ten years ago, and the dream became a reality in January of this year.She wanted to bring that to San Diego because she hadn’t seen it being done elsewhere – most healthy food tends to be more expensive than the less fresh alternative. At Be Fresh, you can get lunch for two for under $15, and not one dish is over $10, making it healthy yet completely affordable.
The shop is entirely family-owned and operated, and Nancy runs the day-to-day business with a few of her close family members. All of their locally-sourced ingredients are picked up fresh daily. Each item on the menu is healthy, yet incredibly filling – the portions are generous – and make for a great midday lunch.
