This year, the San Diego County Fair’s theme will be “The Fab Four,” meant to commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ first visit to the US, which prompted the British Invasion in music as well as pop culture. La Jolla Blue Book got to experience a pre-opening media day, where we got to sample some of the new and exciting fair foods being offered at this year’s 2014 San Diego County Fair. Here is our top five (in no particular order) new fair foods to try this year:
1. Chicken Charlie’s
The first culinary experience we had were the new concoctions at Chicken Charlie’s, which is the fair’s most famous and popular food stand, known particularly for their deep-fried goodies. This year’s new items were deep-fried cookie dough, deep-fried chicken skin and a new variation on their Krispy Kreme chicken sandwich: The Krispy Kreme Triple Decker Cheeseburger. The cookie dough and chicken skin were very unique and flavorful. I enjoyed the chicken skin in particular, which had a flavor that reminded me of pork rinds. The Krispy Kreme burger has a unique salty-sweet taste perfect for sharing.
Next, was Grantburger. This has consistently been one of my favorite places to grub, at the fair. This year’s new item was a Chile Relleno Cheeseburger. The burger contains an actual fried chile relleno along with chipotle sauce and avocado inside a pretzel bun. The flavors meshed really well and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to add some Mexican flare to their burger! This year you can also buy a side of Tasti Chips with your burger at the same time. No more waiting in two lines!
3.Pink’s Hot Dogs
A relatively new vendor to the fair is the world-famous Pink’s Hot Dogs. Based in Los Angeles, Pink’s has started to expand by having food trucks at music festivals, fairs and even opening up a location in Las Vegas. At this event, Pink’s had their entire menu available for sampling. Not being much of a hot dog guy, I went for the Loaded Fries, which were seasoned fries, topped with chili, cheese, onions, sour cream and pepperoncinis. Maybe not the healthiest option, but definitely one of the tastiest!
4. Bacon A-Fair
Another popular food seller was Bacon A-Fair, which is always coming up with new and exciting bacon concoctions. This year’s new item was the Jack Daniels whiskey infused churro wrapped in bacon and served with a side of maple syrup and whipped cream.
5. Grilled Cheese A-Fair
My personal favorite item at the event was one of the offerings at Grilled Cheese A-Fair: Mac & Cheese, Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese Sandwich. This was the ultimate comfort food and I couldn’t stop at just one sample. What else can I say about this other than it was, in my opinion, the tastiest thing at the fair!
Aside from the great food, there was also live music, bungee jumping and even a “real” live unicorn on display! Overall, it was an amazing time as usual with lots of amazing food and plenty of good entertainment.
The 2014 San Diego County Fair opens Saturday June 7th and continues through Sunday July 6th and is closed Mondays and the first two Tuesdays. What fair foods are you looking forward to tasting? Leave us a comment below and you’ll automatically be entered to win a Tasti Chips t-shirt!
