Chances are if you’ve attended an Oktoberfest in San Diego, you’ve tasted a Tarantino Bratwurst. This year, The Tarantino Gourmet Sausage Company will be making their debut as the official bratwurst at this year’s Encinitas Oktoberfest on September 22, 2013.
The Tarantino Gourmet Sausage Company has been doing Oktoberfest’s around San Diego (Ocean Beach, and La Mesa) for over 15 years. We got a chance to sit down and talk with Bernadette Tarantino, one of the company’s leaders and daughter of founder Pete Tarantino, about the family business and the Encinitas Oktoberfest. The Tarantino Gourmet Sausage Company, a family owned and operated business, has been making the finest bratwurst and sausages in the industry for five decades now. They pride themselves on using only the freshest and finest ingredients available free of preservatives.
The company’s venture into the Oktoberfest and festival circuit was quite interesting. About fifteen years ago, Bernadette recalls that she and her husband were enjoying Street Scene when they noticed someone selling sausages at the festival’s food court. They ventured over to it and after having a taste they knew their sausages were much better and so a year later Tarantino started selling their sausages at Street Scene.
Now, let’s talk about bratwurst and the German food Tarantino will be serving at this year’s Encinitas Oktoberfest. Bernadette described their bratwurst as “Jumbo” and quite “larger than most”. They are first marinated in beer before cooking them to perfection on an open grill. According to Bernadette the best way to enjoy a traditional bratwurst is, “spicy mustard, sauerkraut, and grilled onions.” Please no relish or ketchup; otherwise it just becomes…well a hot dog.
Other traditional German foods on the menu include, potato pancakes (served with applesauce or sour cream), locally made jumbo German pretzels (emphasis on the jumbo), and for dessert apple strudel also locally made.
Find them within the beer tent and say hi to Bernadette and her staff who will be in full German regalia.
You can also find Tarantino Gourmet Sausages at Costco, Whole Foods, and various other grocery stores around San Diego. Tarantino is also the exclusive bratwurst served at Petco Park.
