La Jolla real estate agent Jeannie Gleeson has been serving the community for over 25 years, no small feat in today’s ever-changing economy and real estate market. Her enthusiasm and passion for the craft has never waned; in fact, Jeannie’s daughter was so inspired by her mother’s business model that she decided to join her at Berkshire Hathaway in 2013. Together, Jeannie and Kelly have cultivated a formidable mother and daughter real estate team in La Jolla. The Blue Book sat down with the dynamic duo to learn a little bit more about the heart and soul behind two flourishing careers.
Decades of Dedication to the Craft
Jeannie began her working life as a teacher on the east coast. After getting married and giving birth to her twin daughters, Kelly and Kristin, Jeannie and family relocated to the west coast in 1988. She entered the real estate world and worked from the ground up – after spending four years working as an assistant to one of the most highly-rated agents on the coast, she felt she had enough experience under her belt to branch out on her own.
Kelly had seen her mom work as an agent for many years. As a young girl, she remembers going with her mom to appointments and showings, experiences that had a lot to do with Kelly’s decision to become a real estate agent when she was older. During college, Kelly worked as a realtor’s assistant before officially becoming a buyer’s agent for Berkshire Hathaway in 2015; that year, Jeannie and Kelly launched their mother/daughter team and have been working together ever since. Kelly has already hit the ground running – she made a record 17 sales in her first year as an agent.
Mother & Daughter: Dynamic Duo
Though working with the family may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s clear that Jeannie and Kelly complement each other beautifully in the professional realm. Working together continues to be one of the most rewarding aspects of Kelly’s career: “I don’t know anyone who works as hard as my mom does, or anyone else with that kind of integrity or work ethic.” The respect each has for one another is palpable, a trait that sets the team apart from other realtors.
Driven by an innate compassion for people, the pair’s desire to make their clients’ lives better – and easier – throughout the purchasing process is an essential part of their business model. Jeannie and Kelly aren’t motivated by numbers, but rather by making people feel like they are getting 100% effort at all times: “what’s best for the client is ultimately what’s best for us. The client is first, and at the end of the day, we strive to be their advocate above all else.”
When questioned about their favorite part of the business, mom and daughter both replied with essentially the same answer: working with people and hearing their stories, then doing their absolute best to make dreams come true. From young couples buying their first home to single mothers purchasing their first condo, the humanitarian nature of their work never fails to be the best part of their day, and they both work a lot with first-time buyers for that reason alone. Jeannie shared a few quick pointers for first-time home buyers living in San Diego.
Quick Tips for First-Time Home Buyers:
- Look at all of the costs – buying a home is likely a bit more expensive than you think!
- Don’t be afraid that you may not be able to afford something; look for programs that utilize money from your 401K, special loans, etc.
- You only need 3.5% down most of the time.
- Buy – don’t rent! Rent prices have exceeded the cost of most home mortgages in San Diego.
They don’t just work with buyers; they get sales for their clients quickly, and have even sold a listing before it was up on the MLS. Jeannie is also a certified Relocation Specialist, and though she’s worked in every part of San Diego throughout her career, she loves the coast. Kelly has worked everywhere from Lemon Grove to Carlsbad and everything in between, but she has a special place in her heart for La Jolla and North County.
Jeannie is no stranger to receiving accolades for her hard work. For the past three years, she has been ranked in the top 100 agents out of 30,000 Berkshire Hathaway agents in the nation. More recently, she received the Legend 15 Award for achieving Chairman’s Circle for 15 consecutive years.
