One of the most magical parts about the holidays is the process of picking a Christmas tree and taking it home to decorate; most of the time, the family tree comes pre-cut from a variety of local stores or nearby pop-up tents that open for the season. If you’re looking for a more memorable and hands-on tree hunting experience this year, check out one of these San Diego Christmas tree farms and cut your own! You’ll get to browse their selection – usually several acres’ worth – pick your favorite, and cut it down yourself (staff will be on hand to help, of course). Cut your own Christmas tree in San Diego at one of these three farms!
1. Family Christmas Tree Farm
300 Pepper Drive, El Cajon 92021
Located in the community of El Cajon, the Family Christmas Tree Farm is a family-owned ten-acre farm that grows the native-California Monterey Pine for customers to cut down themselves. They provide the saw for cutting and twine for you to tie it on your car. They’ll also shake and drill the tree; the fee is $2 if you want it netted. You can find a great six-footer for about $35. This year the Monterey Pine is available up to 8 feet and they offer stands of various sizes to support the tree you cut. They also sell fresh, handmade Noble wreaths and Douglas fir or Cedar garlands.
2. House Evergreen Forest
3036 N. Victoria Dr., Alpine 91901
Customers have the option to pick and purchase the tree early and then go to cut it down when you’re ready – so go early to get the best picks! They’re open 9:00am til sunset, 7 days a week until December 24. Tall trees over 10 feet are available, and there will be free candy canes and garlands/boughs given out to customers! There is also a picnic area on the property, making it easy to pack a lunch and make a day of it with the family.
3. Pine Tree Acres
620 Haverford Road, Ramona 92065
Pine Tree Acres is a full service Christmas tree farm that has been serving the community for more than 25 years. Choose and cut your own fragrant Monterey Pine (up to 12 feet tall this year), or choose from a selection of fresh pre-cut Noble Firs, Grand Firs, Fraser Firs, and Nordmans. They also sell a variety of potted trees that you can take home and plant in your own yard. All of their trees are kept in water and under shade cloth to preserve their freshness. Shaking, drilling, and netting services are available. They’re open 9am-5pm on weekends and noon-5pm on weekdays, until December 14.
