Chances are, if you’ve ever attended school in La Jolla, private or public, you’ve come across Copy Cove’s work. They print everything from small and large copy jobs, to supplemental books for schools like Bishop’s, as well as personal and business stationery and invitations. This past April, Copy Cove celebrated their 35th anniversary serving the La Jolla community and Blue Book visited the shop to get to know the people who made this happen.
Copy Cove is a third generation printing business helmed by owner and operator, Sal Usman. Sal has been working at the shop for over 25 years and has learned the business from Copy Cove’s founder, his father Mohammed Usman. Sal started working in the shop as a teenager with guidance from his sister, Tehseen while attending La Jolla High School. He didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life after graduation, so upon returning from a trip to Europe he started working full-time at the shop and found his calling in the family business.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Sal knew he wanted to keep the family business alive, but most importantly keep it in La Jolla. Sal loves what he does. His favorite part of the job is doing the bookkeeping which he learned from his mother, Munira, followed by seeing a project through from concept to completion. For him, it’s like a painter seeing a finished masterpiece. On any given day you can find Sal working behind the counter, consulting with long-time clients. Sal is very well known in the Village and has printed for generations of La Jollans.
“I’ve had customers for whom I’ve produced their announcements from their birth, to high school and college, wedding invitations and then their own child’s birth announcements – the cycle continues and so on,” Sal proudly told us. And he would love to continue to do so for years to come.
Copy Cove’s success is also attributed to Sal’s loyal staff, many of whom have been with Copy Cove for multiple years including Patricia, the in-house typesetter who has worked there for 14 years, as well as Client Project Specialists Jeff and Kelsi, along with their Pressman, Tony.
While Copy Cove’s services range from layout and design to print and copy, their most popular print jobs are postcards, flyers, brochures, and business cards. They’re also equipped to do large full color prints up to 48″.
