Sima Alefi is a wealth management advisor. She helps her clients break down financial details into a simple picture of where they stand, without using complicated financial jargon. Sima can help you focus on making a plan for your financial future today.

We had the pleasure of speaking with Sima Alefi about her business.

I understand that you have over two decades in the financial industry. Can you tell us a little bit about your background?:

My background is finance and business management. I started out back in 1994, so 24 years in the financial industry. I started a very successful practice in Northern California, and now I’ve relocated down to Southern California.

Well welcome to Southern California! What do you like best about La Jolla?

La Jolla just feels like a small, cozy town. It’s so serene. I love the ocean, the people, the atmosphere, the little shops. I just love everything about La Jolla.

Are there other advisors on your team?

I’m completely independent. I am the only advisor in the business, yet affiliated with LPL Financial.

So in your opinion, when is the right time for someone to seriously start planning their financial future?

There is really no time. My philosophy is that it’s time in the market, not timing the market. Nobody can predict the future, so to stay abreast of your financial goals the best thing to do is to take the first step. It’s like the Chinese proverb, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” For people that are pre-retirees or retirees, they probably need to stop procrastinating about seeking professional advice and consult with a professional. There can always be surprises in the market and they won’t know what decisions to make.

What would you say is the key to a successful retirement plan?

The key to a successful retirement plan is to pay yourself first, even before you pay your bills. Also, diversify, stay away from greed, and seek professional help.

What is the most common financial mistake you see people make

The most common mistake is selling at the wrong time or buying at the wrong time, and also following the advice of their family, friends or neighbors as opposed to financial advisors. You wouldn’t go to a friend when you get sick, you go to a doctor. The same thing applies to managing finances.

You seem very warm and personable, so I’m sure for you it’s not just a business transactions with your clients:

I pride myself in keeping clients fees low, be generous with my time, making sure that I always do what’s in the client’s best interest and not my firms, and giving people the service and the attention that they deserve.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?:

Seeing people achieve their financial goals. For example if somebody is retired or retiring and they’re seeking better interest rates in todays market, and since interest rates are low, they usually think that there’s not much out there to help them get a nice income stream from the assets that they’ve saved. So to find out that I could actually provide a comfortable retirement income for them and give them more choices than the average CD is rewarding.

I’d imagine that you foster a long relationship with your clients as well:

Yes, I cherish the relationships not only with them, but with their children and their grandchildren.

Local Expert Interview: Real Estate Broker Patricia Denning

How long have you been associated with the Real Estate industry?

Denning has been in the business for over 20 years. She has sold all over San Diego county and is in the re-sale market now, where she specializes in coastal real estate.

How has real estate in San Diego changed during this time?

“Technology has completely changed everything” Denning said. Customers go to the internet as their first resource. They are often informed with listings that are not up-to-date and call brokers with their own game-plan. This change has forced Denning and her colleagues, more than ever, to get out there and be on top of it.

Why File an Early Tax Return in La Jolla?

As a New Year begins, the entire nation starts to dread the April tax return deadline.  Although a majority of people believe filing their tax returns are a dreaded chore and postpone them for as long as possible, there are several reasons why you may want to consider filing your La Jolla tax return early this year.

The biggest reason to file your taxes early is if you expect a return.  The IRS tends to be less busy in January and February compared to March and April, meaning your taxes will most likely get processed faster.  Early filing means you won’t have to wait for the IRS to handle all of the other last-minute filings and you can enjoy your return before everyone else.

Second, if you need professional assistance from certified professional accountants in La Jolla, scheduling an appointment during the final weeks of tax season will most likely be difficult. The sooner you organize your documents and are ready for assistance, the better chance you will be able to schedule an appointment and receive quality assistance.

Another great reason to file your taxes early is to simply avoid being late.  Waiting to file your taxes until the last minute is not only stressful, but if something comes up or collecting your records takes longer than expected,  you may end up owing more money for missing the April deadline.  It is important to leave yourself enough time to prepare your taxes so you don’t miss any opportunities to save.

Generally speaking, filing early is most beneficial for individuals who have simple tax returns or are expecting a refund.  For more advanced taxpayers, factors such as significant stock transactions, owning multiple La Jolla real estate properties or running a small business may make filing early more detrimental than beneficial.

If you are unsure of the best practices to employ when preparing your taxes, local La Jolla tax preparation specialists can help you with a full range of tax preparation services to ensure your tax return is accurate and filed correctly.

Life Insurance….6 reasons why you need it

Summer time in San Diego: family, kids, and fun in the sun. It is a great time to stop and enjoy your family but also a time to reflect. McMullen Group Inc., knows that no one likes to think about what would happen if there was a death in the family. They understand that it’s just too sad and unbearable to imagine. However, the simple fact is, it is going to happen; hopefully later than sooner. Although these situations are tough to think about, it’s important to sit with your loved ones and discuss taking out a life insurance policy simply because it just makes sense.

Not convinced that life insurance is for you? Here are a few more reasons that just make sense…..
1. Pays for Your Funeral Expenses– This will be the first large expense that your family will have after your death. There also may be bills from a long hospital stay if there is an illness or accident.

2. Keeps Your Family Financially Solvent- It enables your family to carry on as before because the money will be there. It is like putting money in the bank for them.

3. Provides Daily Needs After You Are Gone- With the funeral and medical bills coming soon after your death, you want to make sure that your family has enough money to meet the daily needs of food, shelter, clothing, etc.

4. Enables Your Family to Maintain Their Current Lifestyle- You will want your family to continue their current lifestyle and not suffer financially because you are not around anymore.

I can't believe you don't have life insurance!

I can’t believe you don’t have life insurance!

5. Provides for A College Education- With tuition and other educational expenses, your family is going to need all the help they can get and a good life insurance policy can help.

6. Builds an Inheritance- Give a gift or create an inheritance for your children or grandchildren. They may end up having to wait for it, but it still will put the money in their hands and leave you more at ease.

Call McMullen Group for a Life Insurance quote or just talk to them about life insurance and what options are available for your family’s needs.
