The Athenaeum’s “Flicks on the Bricks” Series is Back!

If this warm summer weather has left you wanting to spend as much time as you can outside, The La Jolla Athenaeum’s outdoor movie series, “Flicks on the Bricks,” is back for the seventh year! “Flicks on the Bricks” makes it possible for you to enjoy classic movies that you love while enjoying the beautiful summer night on the patio of the Athenaeum.

“Flicks on the Bricks” will start Thursday, August 1, and will be held every Thursday throughout the month of August. Movies start at 7:30 PM. Not only can you enjoy a perfect summer night with the classics, Barbara Baxter, creator of PlanetWine.net, will pair a wine with your show! Keep in mind that you must be 21 years or older to see the series.

The entire series is four movies, including The Big Sleep (1946), Rear Window (1954), Cinema Paridiso (1989), and The Big Easy (1986). You do not have to be a member of the Athenaeum to enjoy these classics; however, you do get discounted ticket prices if you are. For nonmembers, each show is $22. For members, each show is only $17. August 22-Last, The Big Easy stars Dennis Quaid who plays a New Orleans detective, with some corrupt habits. Ellen Barkin plays an assistant district attorney who is investigating corruption in the police force. This show will be paired with Big Easy Red Malbec and Bawdy Bubbles King Creole Surprise.

Del Mar Racetrack’s Opening Day

Del Mar Racetrack’s Opening Day is upon us again! If you’re looking for an opportunity to get dressed up, bet on some horses and take a day off from the kids, then this is something you won’t want to miss.

Opening Day will be held this Wednesday, July 17, from 11:30 AM to 7:00 PM. Admission ranges from $10 for Stretch Run Admission, to $20 for Clubhouse Admission (regular season admission is $6 for Stretch Run and $10 for Clubhouse). Stretch Run seats are outdoor, shaded but west of the finish line, whereas Clubhouse seats are east of the finish line.

Not only will there be bets to be made on fast horses, but there are opportunities to flaunt your fashionista style as well! On opening day, Del Mar’s annual, “One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest” takes place from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM in the Plaza de Mexico. There will also be a hat parade at 3:00 PM, so come out and see the ladies flaunt their creativity and style.Hat contest opening day

The hats are judged by five categories: most glamorous, best fascinator, best racing theme, funniest or most outrageous, and best flowers/all others. First place in each category grants you $300 and a $100 Studio Savvy gift certificate, second place grants $200 and a $50 Village Hat Shop gift certificate, and third place grants $100 and a Jersey Mike’s gift card. All participants receive two free admission passes for future race days. And for the overall winner, the Bing Crosby Grand Prize is two round-trip airline vouchers to the location of your choosing the U.S. with American Airlines and a $500 Studio Savvy gift basket, which features half in products and half in services! With all these great prizes, who wouldn’t want to enter?

Another awesome feature of the races is the Summer Concert Series. Every Friday and a few sporadic Saturdays and Sundays starting July 19, the Del Mar Racetrack puts on a free concert for for fans attending the races. The Series boasts artists like The B-52s, Weezer and Iration, to name a few!

If you can’t make it out to Opening Day, don’t worry because the races are here to stay! The season ends September 4, 2013. Races are held daily, except for Mondays and Tuesdays.

Adopt a Bench in Downtown La Jolla

Looking for a way to donate to the keeping the city of La Jolla beautiful? The La Jolla Village Merchants Associations has an opportunity for you!

There are numerous benches around downtown La Jolla that are worn out and need some tender loving care. Therefore, the La Jolla Village Merchants Association has decided to put these benches on sale for $2,500 per bench. This money will include the rehabbing of the bench, a plaque with your name on it and five years of maintenance for the bench. This will help the city of La Jolla to keep its’ streets beautiful and give you recognition for your donation with a special plaque.
