If you love books, you’re in luck! California will be celebrating its inaugural Bookstore Day on May 3 from 9am-6pm; finally, a holiday that all book lovers out there can celebrate! More than 90 independent bookstores in more than 80 different zip codes will be pulling out all the stops to participate in this first-ever event. The main attraction will be the books available for purchase that you won’t (and can’t) get on any other day at any other place; but there will also be readings, prizes, and food, and in some cases, famous authors, artists, and people writing live poetry.
La Jolla is proud to be participating in this event through Warwick’s Books, which is located at 7812 Girard Avenue. Warwick’s presenting author will be Brian Selznick, Caldecott-award winning author of The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Brian will be there at 11:00 a.m. to personalize the signed Hugo lithograph.
California Bookstore Day was first announced in June 2013 by the owners of independent Green Apple Books and the executive director of the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association. What started off as a small event has grown into one of the most popular ways to celebrate book culture throughout California; other participating venues near La Jolla include UCSD‘s very own on-campus bookstore on Gilman Drive.
The exclusive items that will be available at Warwick’s include a California Classics Boxed Set by John Fante, Charles Bukowski, Armistead Maupin, and Elmore Leonard; an awesome literary map of California; Congratulations, By the Way (special edition) by George Saunders which is signed, numbered, and doodled in by the author; a bound gift edition short story by Neil Gaiman based on Sleeping Beauty; and a tote bag illustrated with the entire text of Dave Eggers’ A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius – to name a few! There will also be a few surprise items being offered, so be sure to stop by Warwick’s or another participating store to check out all the goodies!
Will you be heading to Warwick’s or another independent bookstore this May 3 in support of California Bookstore Day? What exclusive books are you excited to get your hands on? Let us know in the comments or on Facebook by using hashtag #LaJollaBB!
