Did you know that lung cancer accounts for 27% of all cancer deaths in the U.S.? According to the American Cancer Society, more people die each year from lung cancer than colon, breast and prostate cancers combined. If you want to help make a change, lace up your walking shoes and make strides against lung cancer! Join us at the 6th Annual Breath of Hope Walk on Harbor Island at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 4. All proceeds will benefit lung cancer research at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.
This year, the 5K walk will honor Mike Stevens, who co-founded the annual San Diego Breath of Hope Lung Cancer Walk. Stevens was an active, healthy non-smoker and was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005 at the age of 44. His diagnosis didn’t stop him from taking action. “People get into a routine and can often forget how much fun life can be,” said Stevens following his diagnosis. “My advice? We should all live our lives as if we were about to die. Take that vacation you have always wanted to go on. Call someone you have not talked to in years. Go skydiving. Do something that makes you happy and smile. Or, as I did, get involved.”
In 2009, Stevens and his wife Susan met two other lung cancer patients Kathleen Larson and Maria Enriquez. Together they founded the San Diego Breath of Hope Lung Cancer Walk. It was the first event of its kind in San Diego to raise funds for lung cancer education and research. Since then, the annual event has raised over $600,000. Stevens lost his eight year battle to cancer last September and organizers hope that Stevens’ legacy of helping people will live on through the San Diego Breath of Hope Walk.
Looking to get involved? There are various ways you can help. You can either donate online, become a sponsor, sign up for the walk or start/join a team. The walk is great for the entire family!
Breath of Hope 5K Walk will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 4 at Cancer Survivors Park (4100 North Harbor Drive) on Harbor Island.
