THRESHOLDS is Hannah Johansen’s first solo art show, featuring oil paintings, drawings, digital illustrations, and sculpture. Running from February 25th- 28th at the University of California, San Diego Mandeville Annex Gallery. THRESHOLDS focuses on lowbrow surrealism, self portraiture and psychological monsters. Original art will be available for purchase and the artist will be present Tuesday the 25th for a soft opening from 5-7PM.
Thresholds is focused on transgressing, and the catharsis involved in creation and risk taking. The energy and passion behind my art stems from my resolve- having previously studied and engaged in neuroscience at my university, my desire to create artwork unabashedly stepped forward. Identity, sexuality and gender fluidity are focuses in my work, as I enjoy seductive, playful and shocking art, with an emphasis on performative elements and the visual language bank I have accessed during my studies. I create self portraits and play with the intangible and the reactionary as art functions as my most adept coping mechanism. The materials I typically explore are oil, acrylic, graphite, charcoal, ink, performance, printed digital works and installation.
In Thresholds, I will exhibit 9 major works that are comprehensive of my subjects and mediums. Three paintings, two drawings, two digital prints, and two performance documentations will be installed with site-specific means. Particular lighting and atmosphere illuminate the work to further impact their narrative and presence in person. Also a focus in the gallery is a merchandise table featuring objects art collectors and visitors alike can bring home. I believe stepping over the manufactured threshold of graduation from my university into my career and continued therapy through art will be accomplished through a successful first solo show.
When? The reception will be from 5-9PM Thursday the 27th with light refreshments being served. Mandeville Annex Gallery operating hours are Tuesday through Friday from 12pm to 5pm.
