Classic Elegance with a Modern Twist: ‘Alexia Maria’ Dress Boutique Opens in La Jolla

alexia mariaA brand new evening wear and cocktail dress boutique has arrived in La Jolla: Alexia Maria opened its doors at 1251 Prospect Street just a little over a month ago, and is already taking our little coastal town by storm. Alexia, the store’s namesake, hand-picks fabric and designs every single piece in the store herself; a rarity in today’s bustling fashion world. Whether you’re looking for a classically elegant dress for a formal wedding or a fun cocktail dress for a night out on the town, Alexia Maria’s dresses and gowns are a beautiful and tasteful addition to every woman’s wardrobe. The Blue Book visited Alexia Maria to get an exclusive look inside the new store.

The Story Behind Alexia Maria

Born and raised in Mexico, Alexia Maria Esquer graduated with a degree in finance from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, though she was never a stranger to the fashion world. Even as a child, she took an interest in the glamour and allure of high fashion and was inspired early on by old black and white movies from the 50s, especially those with the iconic and beautiful Audrey Hepburn. Growing up, her mother was a huge source of style inspiration, and to this day, she maintains that two fashion icons are still very much her muses: Audrey Hepburn and her mother.

The idea for an actual storefront boutique came to Alexia somewhat on a whim and after years of dabbling in a passionate hobby. One evening, Alexia was shopping for a cocktail dress for a special occasion; she had a specific look in mind, but after searching high and low, she just couldn’t find what she was looking for. Unhappy with the selection at her local stores (I think most women can relate!) and burned out on what seemed like an endless search, Alexia decided to simply craft her own dress – and the rest is history. She was hooked, and shortly thereafter was enrolled in fashion school in New York.

Vintage & Timeless Elegance

When you walk into Alexia Maria, it feels like a step back in time: vintage-modern decor, black and white accents, and plenty of bright colors and contrast, complete with glass candy jars, macaroons, and even a champagne dispenser perched modestly on a dressing room wall. Alexia makes it a point to choose fabric that imbues her ensembles with a quintessential sense of sophistication; her favorites are silk faille, duchess satin, and organza, all of which are handpicked from specialty high-end stores. It’s that very flair, characterized by Audrey Hepburn and embodied by each and every unique dress at Alexia Maria, that sets this fashionable boutique apart.

Alexia Maria Today

Alexia’s fall/winter collection is out now and available at her store; she will soon have an online store up and running on her website that you can purchase from, as well. The dresses in her collection range in price from $350-$1000 and come in a variety of styles, lengths, and fabrics. When women come in and say they “feel like a princess,” Alexia knows she has achieved her goal: creating beautiful dresses that women feel good about themselves in, which is a large (and rewarding) part of why she is so passionate about what she does. Next time you need a gown for a special occasion, whether it be a wedding, cocktail party, or a fun night out with the girls “just because,” Alexia Maria’s timeless boutique will surely have a dress for you.
