If you’re looking for a cozy place to spend the day with friends over a pot of tea and delicious finger foods then Mary’s English Kitchen is the perfect place for afternoon tea in La Jolla.
At Mary’s you can enjoy authentic English cooking from Branston pickle, a sort of relish, to crumpets and quiche. While you can enjoy a traditional breakfast or lunch, the real treat is the afternoon tea which is what we enjoyed.
Is Afternoon Tea and High Tea the same thing?
Contrary to popular belief, high tea was not historically the glamorous event it is now thought to be. High tea was actually a meal for the working class served between 5 and 7 p.m. after the workday was over. They would serve tea in mugs and enjoy heavy meat dishes. Afternoon tea, on the contrary, was a social occasion for the high class and is when they would serve traditional tea sandwiches, scones and other delicacies.

Afternoon Tea Service
Mary’s offers two types of afternoon teas: the full afternoon tea and the cream tea. The cream tea is perfect when you want a sampling of scones, clotted cream, jams and tea. The full afternoon tea includes a range of finger sandwiches like smoked salmon, beef & horseradish, ham and mustard, and cream cheese and cucumber; savory bites, such as mini quiches and sausage rolls; two kinds of scones; and a selection of dessert treats like lemon bars and brownies. Mary’s will happily provide vegetarians with a meat-free sampling of treats.
A Wide Range of Teas
Mary’s has an extensive tea menu, with over 30 teas to choose from. Each person gets their own personal teapot of loose-leafed tea along with a timer to help you brew tea to your liking. We sampled green, black and herbal teas with clever names like Midnight Vanilla and White Piña Colada. If it’s a hot day out, Mary’s can turn your hot tea into a nice chilled tea.
Mary’s provides a great, but casual atmosphere, as you can sit inside or outside on the patio and is also pet friendly. Full afternoon tea service costs $23.95 per person and kids 12 and under $10.95.
If you’re planning on enjoying afternoon tea, we recommend to call ahead and make a reservation. Mary’s is located at 7918 Ivanhoe Avenue and is open Thursday through Sunday.
UPDATE: Mary’s is now open for dinner! Dinner is available Thursday-Saturday and is open until 9pm. Read more about it here.
