La Jolla is gearing up for the fall season, and there is already news of several new La Jolla restaurants scheduled to open within the next few months that we can’t wait to try. Here’s a rundown of five new La Jolla restaurants that are definitely going to be delicious additions to our gourmet dining family.
Wheat & Water

La Jolla is getting a brand new pizza place in early 2015! This gourmet Italian pizzeria will be crafting pizzas you won’t want to miss, especially since owner Ted Cochrane (of Neptune Restaurant Group) and Managing Partner Justin Lopez consulted with BASIC and URBN pizza guru Joe Magini for it. In addition to local craft beer offerings, Wheat and Water will feature handcrafted cocktails ranging from twists on classic drinks to unique beer cocktails. Cochrane’s vision of “urban meets seaside neighborhood chic” design will offer diners the chance to sample a menu of high-quality dishes served at both communal tables and in a traditional dining room. Wheat and Water’s menu will focus on locally sourced ingredients and include wood fired pizzas, a diverse charcuterie and cheese program, locally sourced seafood, and house made desserts and appetizers. The restaurant will likely open in March for lunch and dinner with brunch on weekends.
Sugar & Scribe Bakery
7660 Fay Avenue, La Jolla 92037
Though it isn’t technically a restaurant, the Sugar & Scribe Bakery in Pacific Beach is so delicious that we’re sure their new location in La Jolla is going to be a hit. From cakes and cupcakes, cookies and bars, pies, Irish specialties like bread pudding and coffee cakes, and gourmet soda breads, there’s a lot to look forward to – and they’re slated to have a full breakfast and lunch menu in the near future. The bakery is set to open sometime this fall where Zenbu Sushi used to be.
Duke’s at the Cove
1216 Prospect St., La Jolla 92037
As we predicted back in June, the newest restaurant set to grace the iconic Top of the Cove spot is none other than Duke’s, a high-end seafood and steak restaurant founded in 1977 that pays homage to Hawaiian surfing legend, swimmer and actor, Duke Kahanamoku. The restaurant, which already has other locations in Waikiki, Maui, Kauai, Huntington Beach, and Malibu, is part of the TS Restaurant Group (Jake’s Del Mar). A team La Jolla-based Marengo Morton Architects and Sixteenfifty Creative Intelligence (Rancho Valencia and L’Auberge Del Mar) is already designing and constructing the two-story interior space, which includes ocean view decks on both levels. Keep an eye out for this new local gem opening sometime in 2015.

La Jolla is getting a new steakhouse! The 15-year-old Steakhouse at Azul La Jolla closed this past September after its parent company, the Brigantine Family of Restaurants, sold the business to Donovan’s Steak and Chophouse. Donovan’s, a mainstay steakhouse in the UTC area for the last 15 years, will be packing up and moving to Prospect Street – complete with ocean views and plenty of windows and light. The 7,800 square-foot space that Azul once occupied is going to need a pretty serious overhaul; the new steak lover’s paradise isn’t set to to open until sometime in 2015.

Whisknladle Hospitality, which runs Whisknladle and Prepkitchen in LJ and Del Mar, have announced a new Italian concept restaurant: Catania. The renovation should be complete by the end of the year, and Catania is aiming to open in early 2015 in the La Plaza Building – which is currently under reconstruction at the corner of Wall Street & Girard. The restaurant will occupy 3,750-square-feet on the top floor of the building, allowing for ocean and village views; it will also be The Plaza’s only full-service, sit-down restaurant. Named after the eastern coastal city in Sicily, Catania’s concept will be comfort-Italian food: heavy on roasted items using wood-burning ovens, grills and rotisserie, the menu will employ a distinctly native feel and could even draw directly from Catania cuisine (pasta alla norma; crespelles or ricotta fritters; and arancinis, or fried rice balls).
An Exclusive Honorable Mention…
There are whispers of a new restaurant called Red O by Rick Bayless (of gourmet Mexican restaurant and PBS fame) opening where Donovan’s used to be near UTC. There is already one in Newport Beach, but could La Jolla be next in line for a brand new Mexican eatery?
