It’s easy to get wrapped up in our day-to-day lives during the year, and sometimes we forget to spend that extra time with our loved ones, especially our grandparents. This year, National Grandparents Day falls on Sunday, September 13; instead of calling grandma or grandpa on the phone or sending a sweet email, invite them to spend time with you in La Jolla for a change of pace. Here are 3 ways you can leisurely celebrate Grandparents Day in the Village!
1. Walk Around the La Jolla Open Aire Farmer’s Market
The La Jolla Open Aire Farmer’s Market is open every Sunday from 9am to 1pm and features over 120 vendors and has been a La Jolla staple for 16 years. The farmers and craftsmen who set up shop at the event sell everything from fresh fruits, cheeses, and guacamole to amazing hand-crafted clothes and jewelry. The market is the perfect place to spend a few hours perusing the aisles and sampling local food with your grandparents. Located on the corner of Girard Avenue and Genter Street, all of the proceeds of the market go directly to La Jolla Elementary School, helping fund art classes, updated technology, improvements to the library, and more.
2. Have a Picnic
Grandparents Day falls on a Sunday, and a picnic would be a fun way to relax and enjoy each others company. Girard Gourmet, located at 7837 Girard Avenue, is a local European-inspired “deli-bakery-restaurant” which makes unparalleled fresh food daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They utilize the organic fruits and vegetables they grow in their Julian garden, and make yummy dishes such as a roasted turkey, avocado, and cheese sandwich on French bread and chicken curry salad on a bed of greens with tomatoes, sprouts, and a side of bread. Stop in with your grandparents and grab some sandwiches, salads, or soups (and a few fresh cookies for dessert), and walk a few blocks down to the La Jolla Cove. Spread a blanket out and enjoy your savory lunch and good company all the while taking in the beautiful coastal view.
3. Go For an Old School Brunch
If you would rather take your grandparent out to eat, Harry’s Coffee Shop is the perfect place to have a casual brunch with those you love. Harry’s has been a part of The Jewel since 1960 and serves up classic breakfast and lunch favorites while giving customers the throw back New York diner feel, complete with comfy leather booths and vintage photos on the walls. Some of their best dishes include the “Denver Omelette” that is packed with ham, bell peppers, onions, cheese and comes with a side of potatoes and toast as well as their “Crispy Bacon Waffle” which is a golden brown waffle filled with bacon bits (and a couple slices put on top for good measure). Located at 7545 Girard Avenue, Harry’s will offer that family atmosphere that your grandparent will appreciate.
Grandparent’s Day is an often overlooked holiday, but we encourage everyone to take some time out of their busy schedule and treat your loved ones to a special day this September 13.
