Gather your friends and family and head to the 36th Annual Beaumont Avenue 4th of July Parade this year. The 4th of July Parade in La Jolla begins at the southwest corner of Camino de la Costa and Beaumont Avenue at 10am and will end at the La Jolla Methodist Church. Here are three reasons why you should kick off your 4th of July at this festive Bird Rock parade.

1. Participate in the Parade

Due to its relaxed nature, anyone is allowed to be a part of the parade. Some choose to put their kids in the stroller and walk through it, some bike or scooter, while others spend weeks preparing a unique 4th of July float. This year’s theme is Western, so wear a red bandana and some blue jeans. Dogs are also welcome, so don’t leave any family members at home.

2. Prizes are Awarded

As an incentive to those who spend time making a float, three different awards are given out. The float that makes the biggest impact will receive first prize, the “Uncle Sam Award.” The most creative interpretation of the theme will win second place and the “Silver Bowl.” Finally, third place will be given to the runner up for the best float. To encourage Bird Rock residents who choose to admire the parade from their houses to get involved, the “4th of July Spirit Award” will be given to the house who has the best Independence Day decorations. Sparklers and other fun 4th of July decor can be found at the gift boutique Hi Sweetheart on Ivanhoe Avenue.

After a few hours of fun at the parade and listening to the band stationed at the end, it might be time to head to lunch, so walk a few blocks to one of Bird Rock’s best restaurants. Voted Top-Three Best Family Restaurant by the La Jolla Light Reader’s Poll, Beaumont’s Eatery is stationed on Bird Rock’s main street and offers a wide variety of food made from local vendors, all at a reasonable price. Their Beaumont’s Burger with a basil aioli is a classic favorite, for something lighter try their Meg’s Kitchen Sink Salad made with 21 ingredients.
