The 2nd annual So Fine on Kline event, presented by Mary Star of the Sea Church, will be on Saturday September 20 from 10am – 7pm. This totally FREE throwback block party will feature live music; raffles and silent auctions; delicious barbecue munchies; arts and crafts; a Kid Zone for the little ones; and for all you craft beer lovers, a beer garden sponsored by Rough Draft Brewing Co – complete with other “adult beverages” and frozen lemonade. Even better, Uber will be providing FREE rides (one way) to and from the event with the special promotion code “sofineonkline.”
The event started in 2013 as a simple, old fashioned throwback, much like the nostalgic block parties of the good old days: shootin’ the breeze with the neighbors and enjoying some good barbecue, cold drinks, and the beautiful outdoors. The founders wanted something truly La Jollan, where people could come out to enjoy themselves for free and not worry about what dressing up or dining gourmet. The goal is to have fun and help foster that unique La Jolla community spirit we all know and love.
Five live bands will be playing, including The Routine, Maruk (a Brazilian band), and the HoneyRock band, a pop rock cover/original band. Dan Plante from KUSI will be the official MC. My Art Shed (Girard Ave) will be sponsoring an arts and crafts booth; crafts will be set up throughout the day, so the little ones can stay busy with something fun. The Kid Zone includes 4 inflatable jump houses, a 27-foot high slide, a wipeout zone, and even a petting zoo from 10am-1pm. The fire department will also have a fire truck on display, so kids can ask questions and take photos.
There will also be other games and prizes, as well as an ongoing silent auction and a 50/50 raffle – half of the proceeds from the raffle as well as all money raised will go toward renovating the hall at the La Jolla Community Center, which is often used for things like the annual Christmas Parade and other local events. Giveaway prizes will be from places like the Grande Colonial (Nine-Ten Restaurant), Roadrunner, Shannon & Co., White Orchid, Froglanders, Ascot Shop, La Jolla Brewing Company, and tons more.
One of the items up for auction will be a beautiful, custom-made Bessell surfboard, one of the largest surfboard manufacturers in Southern California. One of the silent auction prizes will be a dinner with local firefighters! The lucky winner will get to go to the firehouse, where the firefighters will cook a “gourmet” dinner for all! Other prizes include free stays at local hotels, some dining deals from restaurants like Eddie V’s, and other discounts.
