Creating Romance in La Jolla

Candlelight. Wine. Gazing at the stars. A moonlight walk on the beach. These are certainly characteristic images of romance for all the right reasons. Whether you have a special occasion to rejoice in or merely want to spend some remarkable time together, La Jolla’s ever scenic and sandy shores are always available to arrange the unspoiled backdrop for the picture-perfect date.

Why not have a Romantic Picnic?

Got romance? Begin a fantastic day off working in those exceptional details sure to prompt a sincere smile. Packing a picnic lunch is a great case in point. Lay down a blanket and embellish it with your date’s favorite appetizers and beverages to show you truly know what they like. A picnic on the grassy areas at La Jolla Cove or La Jolla Shores is highly recommended, where you and your date can munch out while overlooking the expansive Pacific Ocean. On the other hand, if you’re seeking to make a beach trip out of your date, give it a shot at Blacks Beach or Boomer Beach.

Go on An Adventure!

Nothing speaks true romance like an exciting activity! Perhaps your date has always wanted to try hang gliding or jet skiing? Why not grab your special someone and prepare for a great escapade? Conversely, how about a romantic day of horse back riding? If the ocean is more in tune with your flair and senses, you can always snorkel and scuba, or even venture out for a full day of sailing.  La Jolla definitely has everything for the perfect date that will long be remembered.

Dining with an Ocean View

Didn’t mama tell you that sometimes the way to a heart is through the stomach? Why not share an appreciation for both food and each another at one of La Jolla’s heavenly, fine dining locations? If you’re taking this route, ensure that you book reservations ahead of time. Not only do reservations assure a table of your choice if you book in advance, but it demonstrates to your special loved one that you went out of your way and took the extra time and thoughtfulness to plan the repast ahead of time. This is sure to make your date feel considerably more extraordinary. Unfamiliar with fine dining in La Jolla? No worries! Some of the more romantic restaurants in La Jolla consist of The Shores, which is positioned right on the sand, Brockton Villa, which extends a panoramic observation of the Pacific, and the Marine Room, a restaurant which is acknowledged as an influential part of the community and also the recipient of the AAA Four Diamond Award in 2013. Fine food prepared by exceptional chefs and decadent wines of the highest quality served by friendly and accommodating staff are the rule at these incomparable restaurants.

Get a Room

Getting all snuggly and comfy? If anybody advises you and your date to get a room, take them up on it and go for the gusto! It truly goes without saying (but why not say it anyway) that La Jolla has some of the finest hotels in the entire state. Be sure to check out La Jolla’s hotels HERE

The History of the La Jolla Playhouse

la-jolla-playhouse

Theater aficionados from San Diego to San Francisco, from scenic La Jolla to the cities across the contiguous United States, as well as international cities, have visited and enjoyed any of a number of theatrical plays at the La Jolla Playhouse. Founded in 1947 by La Jolla native Gregory Peck, stage and film star Dorothy McGuire, and film director and producer Mel Ferrer, the La Jolla Playhouse was subsequently reborn under the direction of artistic director Des McAnuff in 1983 and has garnered international acclaim for over three decades.

The Playhouse’s vast repertoire includes eighty-four world premieres, thirty-two West Coast premieres, and eight American premieres, and has won in excess of three hundred honors, including the 1993 Tony Award as America’s Outstanding Regional Theatre. La Jolla Playhouse owes its acclaim to Des McAnuff, Michael Greif, Anne Hamburger, and current artistic director, Christopher Ashley, who assumed the helm in April of 2007, as well as a multitude of up-and-coming as well as well-known actors and actresses.

The La Jolla Playhouse is located on the University of California San Diego campus. Support for the Playhouse stems in part from grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council, the City of San Diego, and the County of San Diego.

Some of the theatrical productions that began at the Playhouse before eventually finding success on Broadway consist of such notable hits as The Who’s Tommy, Matthew Broderick’s revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Jane Eyre, Dracula, the Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Cry Baby, Bonnie and Clyde, and Des McAnuff’s revival of Jesus Christ Superstar and Zhivago. In addition, it would remiss not to mention the Pulitzer Prize-winning I Am My Own Wife.

The internationally-renowned La Jolla Playhouse is also responsible for reaching out to the community and beyond to provide a number of learning opportunities for kids, teenagers, and adults interested in theatre arts, both as actors and behind-the-scenes support staff. Furthermore, the Performance Outreach Program (POP Tour) brings a professional, world-premiere production to various schools, libraries, and community centers throughout the greater San Diego area each and every year. Moreover, there are supplementary summer theater opportunities through the La Jolla Playhouse Conservatory, YP@LJP summer camps, student matinees, and a host of other in-school workshops and classes.

In 2001, La Jolla Playhouse began the Page to Stage Play Development Program to enable and advance the development of new plays and musicals, extending to various audiences an uncommon occasion to take part in the “birth” of a play and experience its progress and fruition. Page to Stage workshops feature nominal sets and costumes. After a performance, spectator feedback sessions offer insight and suggestions for the creative team and actors. Since the impressive program began, a couple of Page to Stage productions have won Tony Awards. In fact, Doug Wright’s I Am My Own Wife won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Leading Actor in a Play (Jefferson Mays). Additionally, Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays, a 2004 Page to Stage Production, won the 2005 Tony Award for Special Theatrical Event. It comes as no surprise then that La Jolla Playhouse is world-renowned for producing some of the more exhilarating and exploratory work in American theatre, all through the auspices of its new play development initiatives, its pioneering Without Walls series, artist residencies and commissions.

Finally, La Jolla Playhouse not only continues its 2017 season with exceptional theater, but additionally hosts several audience engagement events. These consist of Talkback Tuesday’s, where theatregoers can participate in a discussion with actors and artistic staff immediately subsequent to performances in order to share thoughts and learn more about a specific show; Insider Events, where an audience can connect with the Playhouse staff some 45 minutes prior to a performance for an insider’s view of the production; and Discovery Sunday’s, where theatregoers may join special guest speakers post-performance, as they take part with audience members in a moderated discussion that delves into the issues and themes of a play.

The La Jolla Playhouse offers an internship program available to current undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of departments. As a result of innovative plays and various outreach programs and opportunities, the La Jolla Playhouse will continue to add to its rich theatrical history.

Screen Shot 2017-07-21 at 2.22.19 PM

Puesto Mexican Food
Puesto first appeared on the scene in lovely La Jolla (now with a great second location at The Headquarters) advertising itself as fresh Mexican street food. Puesto has lived up to this distinction by serving up fresh and ever tasty Mexican food. Puesto is the definitive must try, as their signature tacos are crafted with a layer of crispy melted cheese topped with your choice of favorite proteins and fixings on a handmade tortilla. Puesto also recently opened a sit-down full-service restaurant located right next door to the original and more casual Puesto on Wall Street. The sit-down menu offers exclusive and various items than that of the causal location along with a full-service bar. Puesto is a fantastic place for lunch or dinner or simply for enjoying your fave adult beverages and delicious appetizers with friends or family. Due to their ever fresh ingredients, Puesto tacos will set you back a mere $12 for three tacos, but hold on just a sec, friendo, if you ease by during Taco Tuesdays they are only $2 per! Taco Tuesday at Puesto, a can’t passer upper! Puesto is located at 1026 Wall St.

The Taco Stand
The Taco Stand is a relative newcomer but nevertheless a fast growing favorite among locals. So what sets them apart from all the rest, you ask? Well, for starters they offer al pastor the authentic way — on a vertical spit. In addition, all meat is of the highest quality and they also make their own hand-made tortillas. Oh! And they offer a decent amount of authentic Mexican sides such as corn on the cob with parm cheese, mayo and chili powder. Inspired by the taco stands of Tijuana and their adventures along the Baja peninsula, The Taco Stand features Mexican flavored popsicles (oh, yum!), refreshments, and imported beer. And if you’re lucky, the churro machine might actually be cranked up and diners can get their dessert on with freshly prepared Rosarito-style churros! The Taco Stand is conveniently located at 621 Pearl St.

Screen Shot 2017-07-21 at 2.24.01 PM

Verdes
Verdes, a.k.a. “The Ranch,” as locals refer to it, has been a La Jolla establishment since WW II era 1945. This sit-down restaurant serves up authentic and traditional Mexican dishes passed down through the family such as Chile Rellenos, Carnitas Michoacan, Pozole, Enchiladas, Burritos, and Tamales, as well as fresh salads, tasty tostadas, and soups. Be sure to stop by during happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 ‘til 6 p.m. and titillate your taste buds with one of their all the rage tequila margaritas. Verdes is easily located at 7404 La Jolla Blvd.
