The 6th annual La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival returns to La Jolla July 24-25, setting the stage for Fashion Week San Diego in the fall. The festival exclusively celebrates fashion films and, in just a few years, has become a cornerstone for fashion film. This year’s festival will bring talented filmmakers from all across the globe to La Jolla, including James Franco who will receive this year’s Innovators Award via Skype. The event has been dubbed La Jolla’s very own “Cannes of the Fashion Film World” – and with good reason!
The Awards and Celebrities
Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Cinematography are some of the common awards given out at the festival. What sets this awards show apart, however, are the Best Fashion, Best Hairstyling, Best Makeup, and Best Message categories. These awards truly allow the often overlooked creative forces behind these fashion editorial videos to shine.

This year, movie star and fashion film enthusiast James Franco will also be accepting the “Innovators Award” via Skype, celebrating his work in the fashion film world for brands such as 7 For All Mankind and Gucci. Additionally, this year’s festival will be hosted by film and modeling professionals Daryl Johnson and Elsa Martinez. Big name producers and royalty will be in attendance as well.

A Sneak Peak into the Films
A wide variety of films will be screened over the weekend in support of several fashion houses. One to look forward to is Miss Adventure: The Great Escape starring Anna Kendrick and Lily Tomlin. In conjunction with designer Kate Spade New York, the short film is the second episode in a series from director Michael Mohan. Additionally, Antonio Contreras will premiere Massacre, which will conclude his Golden Age of Mexican Cinema Trilogy. A live stage performance will also be included, which will make his film come to life. Another film to look out for is from Adrien Servadio, entitled Stardust, which is uniquely centered around fire and the female body.
Location and Events
The festival will be returning to the Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla on Prospect this year. With its clean and modern vibe, the museum offers the perfect backdrop to showcase all of the films and beautiful dresses that will be the center of attention. On top of the film screenings that will happen on July 24 & 25, the La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival will offer many fun and interactive events throughout the weekend. At 11am on July 25, the festival is allowing anyone from the public (who preregisters) 5 minutes to pitch a feature film idea to the Director of Global Development of HKFilm, Louie Nguyen.
If you are more interested in the fashion, they are offering a 40 minute panel hosted by Shaway Yeh. As the Editorial Director of Modern Media Group in Shanghai, he will speak on China’s growing influence in the fashion world and will offer invaluable information for those who are interested in creating, blogging, or tracking fashion trends. Before the screenings at night, the festival will also have a red carpet out from 3-7:30pm where fashionistas will arrive in avant-garde ensembles, with some even sporting gowns from the films, while striking their best poses for the photographers.
