2013 was a very busy year for the community of La Jolla! Our seaside community witnessed many exciting and unforgettable moments. We were sad to say goodbye to some of our favorite businesses, but we were also very happy to welcome new business openings as well. With the New Year upon us, now is a great time to stop and reflect on the highlights of La Jolla in 2013.
La Jolla was very upset to say goodbye to longtime-tenants Hotel Parisi, Victoria’s Secret, and Panera Bread this year. However, with those closings we were happy to see the opening of multiple restaurants in La Jolla. During the springtime, Amaya La Jolla opened along prospect street and brought with it the flavors of the deep south in a elegant Mediterranean atmosphere. During summertime, two exciting restaurants opened their doors. The Hake Kitchen and Bar opened towards the east end of Prospect street, and Iberico Spanish Bistro and Gin Club opened in the former Vigilucci’s location. Juice bars seemed to be a very popular trend in 2013 with the opening of Nekter, Seaside Smoothie, and the Juice Bar inside Whole Foods. Another exciting announcement was the opening of local businesses at the expanded San Diego International Airport, including La Jolla’s own Warwicks!
In addition to many great restaurant openings, La Jolla also hosted many great events throughout the year. In September, the annual La Jolla Rough Water Swim celebrated it’s 83rd year at the La Jolla Cove and thousands of athletes ages 5-85 participated in the event! Next up, La Jolla was able to host not one, but two film festivals this year. Arclight La Jolla showed more than 100 films for the San Diego Film Festival in October. One of the highlights of the festival was held at La Jolla’s MCASD for the honoring of the Hollywood icon, Judd Apatow! The other film festival held in the community was the 4th annual La Jolla Fashion Film Festival – the worlds largest gathering of fashion film makers and the first international fashion film festival founded in North America. Also in fashion news, was the announcement of the massive UTC expansion and renovation. Michael Kors, Tiffany & Co., Lulelemon, and Teavana were only a number of tenants that opened at the La Jolla mall this year. With the expasnion project in its final stages, we’re looking forward to shopping at UTC even more in the new year!
As we reflect on the highlights of this past year, we’re also looking forward to exciting things planned for 2014! We were happy to hear the announcement of La Plaza La Jolla located centrally in the village. We look forward to the opening of the outdoor mall in 2014. Other exciting soon-to-open businesses include Mary’s English Kitchen and the large expansion of Puesto La Jolla!
That’s a wrap! We hope you enjoyed this exciting year in La Jolla and we look forward to celebrating another great one with you. Let us know your favorite new opening in La Jolla by commenting below. Happy New Year!
