15 Things to Do in San Diego This August

Summer isn’t over yet, San Diego! Kick off August with a bang – there are a ton of activities and events happening all over the city this month, from the Best of San Diego party to SummerFest and tons of outdoor movie screenings. Don’t miss out on anything; spend August in San Diego the right way! As always, please be sure to check ticket availability prior to attending any event.

SummerFest Under the Stars

August 3
Ellen Browning Scripps Park. Head to the beautiful La Jolla Cove for La Jolla Music Society’s annual free concert to kick off this year’s SummerFest! This year they are welcoming back SDYS International Youth Symphony led by Jeff Edmons, then Time for Three takes center stage for an entertaining mix of virtuosity and showmanship. Bring your picnic and enjoy a SummerFest tradition featuring a stunning ocean backdrop! 6:30pm.

Julian StarFest

August 4-6
Menghini Winery; 1150 Julian Orchards Drive, Julian. Julian StarFest, a three-day festival focused around the field of astronomy, will occur in the mountain town of Julian (one of the best spots in Southern California for observing!) The festival includes a free public Star Party on Saturday night (starting around 7pm), astronomy-related exhibition areas, guest speakers presenting on astronomy related subjects, a swap meet and a raffle with some great astronomy prizes. If you love astronomy, this is the festival for you! 7pm-11pm.

Farm to Bay Food & Wine Classic

August 6
Living Coast Discovery Center;1000 Gunpowder Point Dr, Chula Vista. Now in its seventh year, Farm to Bay is a unique tasting event on San Diego Bay that supports coastal wildlife, education, and sustainability at the Living Coast Discovery Center in Chula Vista. With over 40 food and beverage partners and a sold-out crowd, Farm to Bay is the only local fundraiser held on a national wildlife refuge. In keeping with the Living Coast’s commitment to sustainability, Farm to Bay diverted 86% of event waste from landfills last year and reduced overall waste by 57 percent (819 pounds) since 2013.

Oceanside International Film Festival

August 7-14

Sunshine Brooks Theatre. Established in 2009, OIFF is a great opportunity for independent filmmakers to have their work screened and judged. It also gives the film buffs a jump-start chance for viewing local and international films at a place in Southern California known for its rich history, beautiful beaches, and artistic freedom. Watch dozens of independent films and enjoy the great atmosphere.

Latin Food Fest

August 12-15
Embarcadero Marina Park North. This year’s epic four-day ¡Latin Food Fest! includes a kick-off party, two-day ultimate tasting experience, and private chef’s dinner – so that each guest will have endless opportunities to indulge! Celebrate the Campanile Foundation’s Latin culinary celebration at Embarcadero Marina Park North, in the heart of Downtown San Diego.

ArtWalk NTC @ Liberty Station

August 13 & 14
ArtWalk is a yearly festival that brings together all facets of the arts in San Diego while promoting original art. This year, more than 100 artists will be in attendance, plus a dozen musical performers, gourmet food, and interactive kids’ activities at KidsWalk. Attendees will be able to experience art al fresco to create the perfect viewing under natural light and purchase artwork directly from the finest artists in the region. Attendees get to meet with artists and hear what inspires them about their work.

Cardiff Dog Days of Summer

August 13
Newcastle Ave & Aberdeen Dr, Encinitas. Dog Days of Summer is San Diego County’s largest dog-centric event! Beginning at 10am watch or enter in 4 different dog contests including Cutest Puppy, Dog/Owner Look-A-Like, Best Looking Big Dog and Best Looking Small Dog. After the contest, local musical talents will be showcased in conjunction with the Lost Abbey beer garden with Second Cousins at 1pm and Trouble in the Wind at 3pm. Bring your pup and enjoy a beer!

Hillcrest CityFest Street Fair

August 14
5th Ave & University Ave. CityFest takes place in the heart of Hillcrest and is a huge celebration of community spirit through music, arts, crafts, and food. With a rich history of community and spirit, Hillcrest has much to celebrate! Enjoy games, activities, over 250 vendors, live headliner music, a beer garden and much more. Then, stay past sundown to dance with Hillcrest’s best DJ’s under the Hillcrest sign with CITYFEST NIGHT!

Films in the Garden

August 1-29
Botanical Lawn, Balboa Park. Enjoy a night under the stars in the Botanical Lawn (located east of the San Diego Museum of Art) and a selection of films inspired by current exhibitions. Every Monday in August, grab a blanket, bring a few friends, and get a good seat on the lawn for an outdoor movie! Pack your own picnic, or visit Panama 66 before the screening for drinks, dinner, and appetizers. Pets are welcome! Screenings start at 7:45pm.

28th Annual Taste of Mainstreet

August 16
N Coast Hwy 101 & Encinitas Blvd. Visit the annual Encinitas Taste of Mainstreet this year and enjoy a selection of delicious food and drink. Treat your taste buds to samples from 30+ restaurants and enjoy local wine and local craft beer served at 15 Sip Stops hosted by shops and salons.  Pause along the way to enjoy live music at eight venues. 5:30pm.

Chula Vista Harbor Fest

August 20
Bayside Park. Enjoy art, food, and outdoor fun including free kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and fishing at this year’s Harbor Fest. Take an exciting ride on the Vietnam-era Swift Boat or tour the bay on the amphibious SEAL Bus. There will be live entertainment on three stages: the Latin Beats Stage, the Community Stage spotlighting local talent, and the HarborFest Stage showcasing headliner acts. The “Tacos & Spirits Fest” will feature several local taco spots; vote for your fave and see who wins!

Best of San Diego Party

August 26
Liberty Station; 2640 Historic Decatur Rd. The Best of San Diego Party Presented by STK brings together the top restaurants, wineries and breweries for an unforgettable evening of food and entertainment. Enjoy unlimited tastings from celebrated local chefs, sips from local breweries and wineries, and cocktails made from premium spirits. Expect live entertainment, DJ’s and surprise performances. 6:30-9:30pm.

San Diego Spirits Festival

August 27 & 28
Port Pavilion at Broadway Pier. San Diego’s 8th annual Cocktail Culinary and Cultural extravaganza is the last weekend in August on the beautiful San Diego Bay. The two day Cocktail Festival, attracts thousands of people from all over the country and abroad in order to join the fun and entertainment that the San Diego Spirits Festival has to offer.

Bike the Bay 2016

August 28
Embarcadero Marina Park South. Ride the bridge, Bike the Bay! Cruise around the San Diego Bay and enjoy your only opportunity to ride across the San Diego Coronado Bay Bridge. This non-competitive community bike ride is for riders of all abilities and will take you on a scenic, and primarily flat ride, around the San Diego Bay via the Bayshore Bikeway for 25 miles. All riders will return to San Diego for a post-ride festival with food, beverage, beer garden and entertainment. 5:30am-12:30pm.
