Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and for many of us that means having friends and family visiting from out of town. The kids are out of school and there’s a lot of entertaining – and cooking – to be done; get out of the house and spend some time with your loved ones at one of these great Thanksgiving Week Activities in San Diego.
1. Ice Skating by the Sea
November 24-January 2, Hotel Del Coronado
Skating by the Sea returns to Hotel del Coronado for the 12th year on Thanksgiving Day! This spectacular ice rink is one of San Diego’s true gems; located seaside on Windsor Lawn, it features stunning views of the Pacific and Coronado beach. The Victorian Building, adorned with thousands of white lights, provides a magical backdrop as holiday music fills the air and guests enjoy hot chocolate. Entrance is $25 per person.
2. San Diego Jazz Fest
November 23-27, Town and Country Resort & Convention Center
The 37th annual San Diego Jazz Fest will take place over Thanksgiving weekend with a variety of traditional jazz music at the Town & Country Resort and Hotel in Hotel Circle. Jazz bands and musicians from across the U.S. will perform over the course of five days, playing everything on the jazz spectrum: trad, swing, boogie-woogie, ragtime, dixieland, gospel, and rockabilly.
November 24, Oceanside Civic Center
Move your feet before you eat this Thanksgiving at Oceanside’s 11th Annual PMCU Turkey Trot 10k or 5K run/walk! Join one of the fastest growing holiday traditions. Be sure to bring the whole family, as there will be races for everyone. The event also offers a costume contest, largest teams competition, fabulous live entertainment on the course and finisher medals for all participants. Free digital photos, medals, shirts, and timing provided to all registered participants.
4. Thanksgiving Buffet at the Zoo Safari Park
November 24, San Diego Zoo Safari Park
Celebrate Thanksgiving Day at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Hunte Nairobi Pavilion, where you can enjoy a lavish buffet with Thanksgiving favorites, chef’s specialties, and a special selection just for the kids. Two seatings, at noon and 3pm, are available. Guests will be seated at their own reserved table, set according to their guest count. The cost is $46.95 for adults/$18.95 for children ages 3 to 11; plus tax and parking. Admission is required for nonmembers.
5. San Diego Run for the Hungry 5k & 10k
November 24, Horton Plaza Mall
Run for the Hungry has been a longstanding Thanksgiving tradition; for every participant, at least 185 meals will be raised through each runner’s race fee to help individuals and families in need (all profits are donated to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and hunger-relief programs such as the JFS Food Mobile and HandUp Food Pantry). The race starts in front of Horton Plaza in the Gaslamp and continues through downtown.
6. DELights on the Garden Patio
November 24-January 2, Garden Patio @ the Hotel Del Coronado
Every evening starting Nov. 24 from 5pm-9:30pm, The Del will be adding even more holiday magic with DELights – a glittering light show and holiday experience in the Garden Patio at the center of the resort. The patio will be transformed into a winter wonderland of holiday sights, smells, and sounds with a shimmering array of icy colors, snowflakes, polar bears and a video mapping light show projected onto a 40’ multi-faceted tree every 30 minutes.
7. White Christmas: The Musical
November 25-December 4, Spreckels Theatre
The beloved, timeless film White Christmas comes to the stage in this heartwarming musical adaptation featuring several Irving Berlin songs. The dazzling score features well known standards like Blue Skies, I Love A Piano, How Deep Is the Ocean and the perennial favorite, White Christmas. Visit their website for performance schedule.
8. Surfin’ Santa Arrives in Seaport Village
November 26, Seaport Village
Get ready for Santa to bust out his boardshorts and favorite Hawaiian shirt on November 26 and cruise in from San Diego Bay via Seaplane for the 11th annual Surfin’ Santa celebration at Seaport Village. From 1-5pm, visitors can pose for pictures with Santa on his giant surfboard, riding a six-foot wave. A festive parade along the boardwalk, kids crafting activities, and live street performers will also be going on that day.
9. Julian Country Christmas & Tree Lighting
November 26, Pioneer Park
The city of Julian officially celebrates the start of the Christmas holiday season on November 26, with performers set for appearances up and down Main Street, as well as the traditional setting in the Pioneer Museum Park. The festivities begin at 1pm and will culminate with the lighting of an 80-foot Christmas tree at 5:30pm and the arrival of Santa just as the sun sets.
10. Adams Avenue Spirit Stroll
November 26, along Adams Avenue
Ring in the holiday season during the second annual Adams Avenue Spirit Stroll taking place from 2-5pm on Saturday, November 26th, 2016. Sample holiday cocktails curated by 14 of Adams Avenue’s most talented bartenders from the area’s popular restaurants and bars. The holiday themed cocktails are offered inside several Adams Avenue retail locations, so you can sip while you shop the best of Adams Avenue.
