San Diego Fishing

San Diego Fishing

Your mother was right when she said there are a lot of other fish in the sea, and in the lakes. San Diego is listed as #2 in Field and Streams Magazine's list of America's Best Fishing Cities. This is probably due to San Diegans having the option to fish from lakes, bays, piers and even in fishing boats in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Fishing has always been a part of history. Dating back more than 40,000 years, fishing has proven to be a reliable source of food for survival and a favorite pastime as well. There are numerous techniques for fishing such as netting, spear fishing, trapping, and angling.

For San Diego fishing, head to San Diego lakes such as Miramar, Murray, or Lake Hodges to catch bass, rainbow trout, channel cats and crappie. Or cast your line in the deep blue Pacific for halibut, albacore, sea bass and bonito. You don't need a permit to fish in San Diego off public fishing piers, but if you're 16 years or older and plan to fresh-water, shoreline or sport fish you must obtain a permit from the California Department of Fish and Game. They are available at most bait and tackle stores in San Diego. For information call the Fish and Game Department at (858) 467-4201.
